Planning Our Winter Honeymoon

I’m getting married in three and a half months. Holy crap. That wedding countdown app is scary. It’s like a family member shouting at you saying ‘hey, earth to Kiri, your wedding is on the horizon, get your butt in gear!’

The truth is, I’m awful at planning, and I’m not the most organised when it comes to sorting out an epic party. ***please someone do it for me*** Hence why I STILL haven’t planned my honeymoon. Being a travel writer, you’d think that would be the first thing on my wedding to do list, but to be honest, I’ve just not had time yet.

Plus, it’s a huge decision. I mean, it’s the mother of all holidays. It has to be amazingballs. So, understandably, my fiance and I keep umming and ahhing about where to go and what to do. But we do know one thing, we are splitting our honeymoon in two (or in logical terms we’re being greedy and having two honeymoons), one winter snowy break just after the wedding, and then a proper sun soaked holiday in the summer.

For the latter we’ve got plenty of planning time, so we can chill on that one a bit, but we need to book our winter honeymoon, and soon. And not just because prices will keep going up, but also because I need something to look forward to after the wedding.

Our winter honeymoon inspo came from our trip last year. We went to Germany and Austria on an epic Christmas road trip, and it was so incredible. Oh, and we took our huskies with us, obviously. So we’re going to do a similar thing, but more upscale (honeymoon luxe obviously) and to a different destination.

Last year’s trip included stopping off in Cologne and Nuremberg for the Christmas markets (which were magical by the way), and then heading to the picturesque mountains and lakes in Austria not too far from Salzburg.

We’ve hit a major stumbling block in the planning stages. Last time we took our car, which we lease. We ended up driving 2,000 miles, and yes, in case you are wondering, we’ve got a mileage limit of 10,000 miles per year. So, this year we can’t take our car, we’ve got to rent one.

We worked out that with the crossing, +taking two dogs + petrol + the tolls, it would cost us nearly a grand just to get to somewhere like Austria. That’s not going to work, especially considering the fact that we obviously want to stay in plush accommodation because, well, it’s our honeymoon. So unless someone lends us their car or we find a super cheap car hire company, I’m not sure we can honour our initial wishes. Crap. It’s back to the drawing board.

We may need to consider places that are a little closer to home, where we might not get snow. But by god, I really really want snow. It’s what makes winter breaks so special. We could just leave our dogs at home and fly to somewhere like Norway for about £70 each way for both of us. It’s just that we’ve both agreed that being somewhere snowy without our beloved huskies doesn’t feel right. I know we’ll be sad not seeing them running around in the snowy fields and having them to take on long walks. What’s the point in walking without a dog anyway? (jokes).

Current potential options includes places like the Scottish Highlands (with a day trip to Edinburgh), Bruges, Belgium or Switzerland which isn’t quite so far, but accommodation is ridiculously expensive. I’m determined to make our dream winter honeymoon happen somehow, we just need to think outside the box. If you lovely people have any suggestions help a gal out will ya?
