Why I’m Introducing A ‘Circuit Breaker’ Wellness Routine

how to switch off from technology

I’m spent. Technology is consuming all the brain power left in my exhausted mind.

It’s everywhere. Everything you do involves scanning an app, filling in an online form, sending an email or checking a website. Why do we now live in a world where it’s practically mandatory to be online? No, I do not want to download yet another app to carry out a simple task. There absolutely shouldn’t be an app for that!

I’ve just spent a good hour on my phone trying to delete enough videos to free up space. Every time I delete stuff, it says my memory is full again? It’s like my phone is holding me prisoner, and I’m totally done with it. I want to break the cycle. Which goes a bit like this:

  • Wake up
  • Check phone
  • WhatsApp convos on phone
  • Instagram checks
  • Email checks
  • Work on a laptop online all day
  • Book appointments in on my phone
  • Record videos for social media on a phone
  • Edit and upload videos
  • Catch up with WhatsApp convos
  • Doomscrolling
  • Watch TV
  • Bed

How to give your mind a rest from technology

Exhausted with screens? Tired of technology?

Have you ever stopped to think that 95% of your daily tasks are carried out on some sort of screen?

Your mind is crying out for a break.

So, introduce a circuit breaker.

What do I mean by this?

Well, if you start to feel like you’ve hit a technological wall and your mind is absolutely fucked, consider doing something different. Or better still, have a go-to routine that will transport you out of the world of technology and into reality.

Your wellness circuit breaker routine might look a bit like this:

  • STOP
  • Put your phone down
  • Go for a walk outside (up and down your street will do)
  • Have a cold/hot shower
  • Fuel yourself with some food that awakens your senses
  • Make a nice warm cup of herbal tea (something that smells lush)
  • Do something creative (write, art, sewing, crafting, cooking) to unwind
  • Read a book that you can escape into
  • Sit or look outside and take in some nature (a tree, a field, birds, a lake etc)

You don’t have to do all of these things. This could be your long circuit breaker routine for when you need a few hours to escape ALL technology.

Need a quick recharge? Pick a few things from the list to give your mind a rest. For example, you could simply:

  • Walk around your garden
  • Make a cup of tea
  • Splash your face with cold water

We all need times where we can disconnect. When everything we do is based on a screen, it can lead to burnout. If you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to figure out how much of your day you are spending on a screen. Then set small goals. Work to reduce it by 5% every few days.

The next time you want to smash your phone on the floor or scream because you’ve had enough technology for one day, give your circuit breaker routine a go. It will make a huge difference to your wellbeing and give you a coping strategy for when your brain is about to burst.
