As 2015 draws to a close, now is the perfect time to reflect on what changes you can make next year to improve your happiness. In reality, most people who make New Year’s resolutions don’t end up keeping them. That’s why I am not making resolutions, I am making considerations. Things I want to keep in mind and consider over the next twelve months, and beyond.

Simply making this list of things I want to think about doing next year has got me appreciating some of the things I have, and what matters the most to me. You might want to pick one or two things that you really want to work on, things that might have a big impact on your life.

I can easily pick a couple of things from the list below that I know would make an enormous impact on my happiness. Use some ideas from my considerations list, and throw some of your own in. Here’s 22 top tips for staying happy throughout 2016, and beyond….

1. Shut down a social media account

You don’t need to be on 474839 social media sites, your life will not fall apart if you ditch Facebook. 

2. Learn to say no

Try to consider your needs before agreeing to things right away, don’t be afraid to say ‘no’ to something you know won’t benefit you.

3. Purchase some inspirational wall art

My friend made me some inspirational wall art for my office, and it helps keep me focused and motivated every day. Try it. Pick a quote that means something to you, and live by it.

4. Get a pet/spend more time with your pets

A few cuddles with my dog can instantly improve my mood. Get yaself a pet, or spend more time with the ones you already have.

5. Spend money on moments over material things

In 2016, try not to buy loads of crap you don’t need. Instead, spend your money on experiences that you will treasure and enjoy.

6. Start your day off with a hot lemon tea

A bit lame I know, but trust me on this one, I can’t begin my day until I have had my hot lemon tea. Swap it for your morning coffee if you dare.

7. Spend time with the people who matter the most

Don’t waste your precious time on people you know deep down will disappoint you or fade away in time. Spend time with the people who mean the most to you.

8. Buy yourself one super special treat

OK, so I know I said don’t buy material things, but you can treat yourself to one super fantastic treat each year. Buy yourself that bag, watch, piece of jewelry or shoes you have wanted for like, forever.

9. Get on top of your savings

Borrrinnngggg, but such a good one. Putting money into your savings makes you feel like a proper adult and super proud of yourself. Wake up and start saving before it’s too late.

10. Do something this year to help others

Practice altruism in 2016, and try and do at least one big thing that will help others. Volunteer, donate to charity, help out a friend in need or give your time to a good cause.

11. Travel to interesting places

Travel enriches your life and provides you with wonderful memories. See the world, one bit at a time.

12. Forgive at least one person who has wronged you

Holding a grudge doesn’t benefit you in any way, it just makes YOU unhappy, not the other person. Let it go and you will feel instantly relieved.

13. Avoid partaking in gossip

In 2016, try and avoid gossiping with your friends. If someone starts gossiping, discourage them instead of encouraging them.

14. Find a type of exercise that you enjoy

Quit slaving away doing boring exercise that you bloody hate. Make an effort to find a type of sport/exercise that you actually enjoy in 2016.

15. Eat lots of stuff filled with goodness

Eat well, live well. Simples. I am not going to preach about healthy eating, just eat lotsa food filled with goodness and give your happiness (and health) a boost.

16. Disconnect from your phone as often as you can

It’s depressing how much time we all spend on our phones (myself included). Put down your devil phone and take in the world around you.

17. Binge on a TV series that you love

Find an awesome TV series that you absolutely love and enjoy a proper TV series binge on Netflix. Or simply allow yourself to unwind and watch a cheeky episode when you need to switch off.

18. Read an inspirational book

Make it your mission this year to read an inspirational book. Find a book that will motivate you to do better and work towards being happier.

19. See/speak to ‘that’ relative more often

You know what I am talking about. That relative that you never call or visit but you know deep down you should. Make contact, you will feel better for it.

20. Take up meditation or practice mindfulness

Find a way to quiet the storm in 2016. Choose an activity or calming method that suits you, and do it when you need some quiet time to switch off from the world.

21. Stop comparing yourself to others

Comparing yourself to others is soul destroying, stop doing it. Focus on what you are doing and the wonderful things you have.

22. Work towards doing something that you love

It’s not always possible to just quit your job and embark on a new journey, but you can make baby steps. Always keep working towards doing something that you truly love.
