Race-cations: Why Running Holidays Are Having A Moment

When we think of what ‘going on holiday’ looks like to us, we usually have very different ideas and preferences…

Some people love a city break centred around sightseeing. Many of us envision a chilled break away with as little distance between the pool and our sun loungers as possible. And now there appears to be a growing interest in holidays that combine sports, like running and marathons. And so the holiday subcategory race-cation is born, and it appears to be thriving!

A breakaway does not need to be slow-paced, relaxed, or indulgent. It can be the total opposite; it can be meticulously planned, high-octane, and even involve a lot of running if that’s your thing. It’s normal to clock up 6-7k worth of steps a day on a city break or go for the odd bike ride here and there, but an ultra marathon or an obstacle race? That’s another level.

For a lot of sporty people, including athletes, the idea of going on holiday and sitting by a pool and doing nothing might not be so appealing. Some people like to remain active whilst on holiday, and what better way to do that than by entering a race? It means you can stay fit and also run or compete in beautiful surroundings at the same time. And there are some truly epic race-cation options and races to enter around the world. So, are you ready to write your race-cation bucket list?

Why are they on the rise?

running and sports holidays ideas and inspiration Race-cations are more than just travelling for a race or marathon and then immediately going home the next or same day. They are becoming serious holiday ideas for many people. EuroNews research found that in 2025, 59% of runners stay three to five nights or even extend their trips after their race, proving that race-cations are often about seeing and doing more than just crossing the finish line.

Yes, some runners like to travel to different cities, countries even, to compete or run and then go straight back home. But all that travelling can be taxing on the body, just as much as running, and not only that, imagine travelling cross-country to some of the most beautiful cities to run and not staying long enough to explore them.

More and more runners are opting to make a whole holiday experience centred around their run, and I think it’s a brilliant idea. Exercise, new experiences, world-class food, diverse culture and sightseeing all rolled into one. Race-cations sound like a great package holiday of their own.

And the best thing? No two race-cations are the same!

Different types of race-cations:

As I said, no two race-cations are going to be the same. Why? Because there are so many different types of runs and marathons. Plus, different countries, cities, and destinations offer unique experiences in themselves…

Cities

Love exploring a new city and seeing all the sights? City races let you tick off iconic landmarks while clocking up the miles. Think of it like your very own guided tour with a medal waiting for you at the finish line. Fingers crossed for the gold!

Scenic trails with a view

Not a fan of busy streets and bustling cities? Many people book running events in destinations that boast breathtaking scenery, like trail races that take you through forests, mountains and coastal paths. They’re perfect for combining a love of running with the chance to explore the great outdoors.

Themed

From fancy-dress races to charity events and even obstacle courses, themed races add even more fun before the finishing line. They’re a great excuse to get friends or family involved and enjoy a destination run in a more lighthearted way.

Competitive

Of course, many runners are chasing their personal best, ticking off a bucket-list marathon (maybe even an ultramarathon) or competing in tough races. These types of race-cations are not for the faint of heart, as they offer the thrill of testing yourself against the clock.

Many of these world-famous running events take place in incredible destinations, making them the perfect centrepiece for a memorable holiday. Imagine you’re dreaming of competing in the Boston Marathon; if you’re travelling all that way, it’s worth exploring the city and having a rest day or two somewhere new; a race-cation!

Triathlons

Iron Man is growing in popularity. For some people, a marathon isn’t quite enough, so they try three disciplines. It’s an epic achievement. With races taking place in cool spots like Sweden, Hawaii and Denmark, you can plan your iron man race and enjoy some travel post-event.

Obstacle races

Do you find running a little bit boring? Well, perhaps obstacle racing is for you (OCR). It involves running a race with a series of challenging obstacles like rope climbs, water dips, monkey bars and shooting targets. Some races are more gruelling than others. You can choose from short, middle and long distances (obstacle marathon anyone?). Why not head to Morzine in the Alps where you can complete a Spartan race? Or perhaps the Tough Viking course in Sweden is the perfect challenge. Take your pick!

Easily combine running with your travels

Even though the race itself might be the reason for booking the trip, it certainly doesn’t have to be the whole holiday. You can plan a nice getaway centred around your sport activity, especially if you are travelling long-distance. But even if you’re only going to a neighbouring city, I’m sure there’s still plenty to explore to make the trip worth upgrading to a mini holiday.

After all, a race-cation doesn’t just have to be about earning a medal; it can be an opportunity to collect experiences, discover new places and come home with new memories that last long after race day.
