The Importance Of An Occasional Wellness Treat

why you should have massage and relaxation treatments in a hectic world

You know what one of my favourite things in the world is? Massages. Literally the best thing on earth. Don’t you think it’s strange how we live in this crazy fast-paced world where we never seem to switch off, yet very few of us spend out on relaxation treatments?

You might spend your extra money on alcohol, nights out or buying pointless stuff that you won’t really use, when you could be spending it on something that can instantly boost your physical and mental health. We run ourselves into the ground. We push our stress levels to the max. But we’re not very good at winding down, or setting our priorities straight.

When you hit a wall…time for some relief

This past week, I swear I maxed out my brain capacity. I had a huge deadline and a few major projects, and I took on more than I should have. I don’t regret it now because they were awesome projects and, well, hello extra £££ – but boy did it knock the wind out of my sails. Yesterday I couldn’t form proper sentences when talking to people. I tried to type but my mind was like soz, ‘computer says no’.

So I text my fiance and had a grumble. I was like, help, it literally feels like my brain is going to burst. You know when you’ve been thinking so hard for so long that you grab your face and rub your temples in despair? That was me. Yet, it wasn’t me who came up with the oh so obvious idea to have a relaxation treatment, it was the other half. He was like ‘you’ve worked your ass off, book yourself a treat, you deserve it.’ I was like, hell yes, you know what, your bloody right.

Wellness shouldn’t be a luxury

I don’t book regular wellness treatments but I should. I’ve chatted to reflexologists and massage therapists about this. The general consensus is that people don’t see these things as a necessity when they should be. You get back so much from a simple little massage.

So as I was about to crumble on the floor and break down into a million pieces yesterday, I made a decision. I booked myself a treatment. And it literally saved me. It revived me, and made me feel more human again. I know for sure I wouldn’t have been able to carry on if I hadn’t had it. It’s a shame though that we let ourselves get to the point of utter exhaustion before we act. We should be prempting these little breakdowns and booking in treatments in advance.

I had an Indian Head massage because my head was pumping and it felt like I needed to relieve some tension. But I also find reflexology is so helpful. It seems to help me release a build up of energy and is the only thing that truly makes me relax completely and switch off. Read my article here about why reflexology is heavenly.

I’m not sure why, but whenever I book a treatment, I feel a teeny weeny bit of guilt. Like booking yourself a treatment feels too much of a luxury, when clearly it’s not. We all just need a bit of bloody relief every once in a while. Hell, if I was rich, the first thing I would do is hire a masseuse and have a daily massage.

But we don’t have to go that far. One treatment every month is very reasonable, especially if you do a high-intensity job, or even if you sit at a desk all day. Without massage treatments we might all turn into the hunchback of Notre Dame. And that’s not ideal.

These treatments awaken your body and mind a little. They make you feel more like ‘you’ again, and that’s so important. It’s far too easy to lose ourselves in the mind-boggling rat race that is our lives.  So live a little, give your mind something back after all that thinking. Remind yourself that it’s OK, and very necessary to switch off every once in a while, and to really enjoy life’s pleasures.
